Q. |
What is the purpose of the silicone grease that primary kits are filled with? Is it to keep out water?

A. |
The silicone has nothing to do with water protection, which is kept out by the rubber interference fit seals. Silicone is intended to displace all of the air inside the kit, and thus to minimize corona (the crackling you hear on your car radio as you drive under a transmission line). Severe corona can destroy parts over time. It is questionable whether the silicone is actually required at the voltages levels of series circuits, i.e. <5kV, but it is still used for historical reasons. |
